Foot to Hand Toe Transfer

Foot to Hand Toe Transfer is a highly specialized microsurgical procedure used to reconstruct missing fingers or thumbs by transplanting one or more toes from the foot to the hand. This surgery is designed to restore hand function, grip, and aesthetics—especially in cases where fingers are lost due to trauma or congenital conditions.

What We Do

Our expert microsurgeons carefully remove a toe—usually the second toe or great toe—along with its blood vessels, nerves, tendons, and bone. It is then transplanted to the hand, where its blood supply and nerve connections are re-established using microsurgical techniques. Over time, the transplanted toe adapts and begins to function like a finger.

Who Needs Toe-to-Hand Transfer?

  • Patients with traumatic finger amputation

  • Those born with congenital absence of fingers

  • Individuals who need a functional thumb for grip and pinch

  • Burn victims or industrial injury survivors

Types of Toe Transfers

  • Single Toe Transfer – Usually for thumb or one digit

  • Double Toe Transfer – For reconstructing multiple fingers

  • Great Toe Transfer – Provides bulk and strength, often used for thumb

  • Second Toe Transfer – Offers better appearance and mobility for fingers

Benefits of Toe Transfer to Hand

  • Restores pinch, grip, and fine motor skills

  • Improves hand appearance and confidence

  • Allows patients to perform daily tasks independently

  • Better long-term outcome than prosthetics in selected cases

Risks and Considerations

  • Donor site (foot) may experience slight imbalance or gait change

  • Temporary or partial loss of sensation or motion

  • Risk of flap failure, infection, or non-union

  • Requires extensive rehabilitation and physiotherapy

Post-Surgery Recovery

Patients typically require a hospital stay, followed by hand therapy to retrain muscles and nerves. With consistent physiotherapy, most patients regain a remarkable amount of hand function over time.
